In a thought-provoking article published in the Daily Journal, Angela Reddock-Wright sheds light on the current state of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the legal profession. The article, titled "A Candid Look at Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging in the Legal Profession," explores the challenges faced by law firms in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v President and Fellows of Harvard College, which has significantly impacted affirmative action and DEIB programs.

Despite the progress made in recent years, with women now constituting the majority of associates in U.S. law firms, the article highlights the persistent underrepresentation of women and people of color at the partnership level. Reddock-Wright emphasizes the importance of addressing these disparities and the legal profession's duty to ensure diversity and inclusivity.

The article delves into the strategies that have proven successful in law firm DEIB initiatives, including strong leadership, accountability, targeted recruiting, mentorship and sponsorship programs, affinity groups, and regular DEIB training. Reddock-Wright stresses that each firm's DEIB strategy must be tailored to its unique goals and objectives.

As legal professionals, we must remain committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive profession that reflects the world around us. By continuing to support and adopt DEIB programs, we can create a more equitable legal landscape where every lawyer has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the profession's success.

At Onward Recruiting, we stand firmly behind the principles of DEIB and actively partner with law firms that prioritize these values. Together, we can navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive legal profession.

In today's fast-paced world, prioritizing mental well-being is more important than ever. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or just off-balance, you're not alone. Therapist and former attorney Meredith Siller knows the demands of a high-As a lawyer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), you understand the vital link between those values and a thriving, successful work environment. Your search for the ideal law firm shouldn't just be about caseload or compensation; it needs to be about finding a culture that aligns with your principles.

Unfortunately, not all law firms prioritize DEI in the same way. So, how can you cut through the surface and determine if a potential firm truly embraces the values you hold dear? Here's how to start:

Researching a Firm's DEI Commitments

Start by examining the law firm’s public communications. A firm’s website, press releases, and annual reports can be rich sources of information. Look for a dedicated section on DEI, which can provide insights into their policies and initiatives. It’s important to see DEI reflected consistently across their communications rather than as a one-off mention, which could signify a deeper, more committed practice.

Understanding Representation within the Firm

Representation matters. As you delve into potential firms, examine the composition of their leadership team and staff. A diverse leadership signals a firm's commitment to DEI and indicates a supportive environment where diverse perspectives are valued. Additionally, look for statistics or information about the firm’s demographics at all levels, which are often included in DEI reports.

Employee Resource Groups and Support Systems

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a significant part of many law firms’ DEI strategies. These groups offer support networks for employees from diverse backgrounds and are crucial for fostering an inclusive workplace culture. During interviews or networking opportunities, inquire about these groups and the resources available to support their activities. The active participation and energy of such groups often demonstrate the firm’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

Commitment to Pro Bono and Community Engagement

Many law firms express their values through their commitment to pro bono work and community service. Investigating the types of causes the firm supports can clarify whether their values align with yours. Firms that encourage their attorneys to engage in pro bono activities and give back to the community often prioritize social justice and equity, core aspects of DEI.

Engage and Ask Direct Questions

Do not hesitate to ask direct questions about the firm’s DEI practices during interviews or informal discussions. Questions could include asking about recent DEI initiatives they have launched, the outcomes of these initiatives, and how the firm measures the success of their DEI strategies. The responses to these questions can be very telling and help you gauge the authenticity of their commitment.

Remember Your Worth

Don't compromise your commitment to DEI when evaluating a potential employer. A firm that genuinely champions these values will welcome your questions and respect your priorities. Aligning your career with a firm that shares your vision isn't just about finding a job, it's about creating a workplace where you can feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach your full potential.

At Onward Recruiting, we specialize in helping you find that fit. Our approach is tailored and thoughtful, ensuring alignment of values and culture so you can succeed and thrive. We invite you to connect with us and explore how we can assist you in finding a law firm where your career can flourish and where you can make a meaningful impact.

In your quest for the right firm, take the time to ensure alignment with your values—it makes all the difference.
